A PERSONAL LETTER FROM STEVE MARTIN
DEAR Jerry ,
WHAT A PLEASURE IT WAS TO RECEIVE A LETTER FROM YOU. ALTHOUGH MY SCHEDULE IS VERY BUSY, I DECIDED TO TAKE TIME OUT TO WRITE YOU A PERSONAL REPLY.
TOO OFTEN PERFORMERS LOSE CONTACT WITH THEIR AUDIENCE AND BEGIN TO TAKE THEM FOR GRANTED, BUT I DON'T THINK THAT WILL EVER HAPPEN TO ME, WILL IT Jerry? I DON'T KNOW WHEN I'LL BE APPEARING CLOSE TO YOU, BUT KEEP THAT EXTRA BUNK MADE UP IN CASE I GET TO Flint.
SINCERELY,
(Signed, 'Steve Martin')
STEVE MARTIN
P.S. I'LL ALWAYS CHERISH THAT AFTERNOON WE SPENT TOGETHER IN RIO, WALKING ALONG THE BEACH, LOOKING AT rocks.

Sad to think this is the same man who later starred in such cinematic gems as "Baby Mama" and "Cheaper By The Dozen 2".
The P.S. almost caused me to soil my pants. Legend.
Always, or used to be, brilliant. He needs to get back to what he was. Dunno what his focus is anymore, but it's not entertaining. We miss the "wild and crazy guys"!
It's odd that people assume a guy that started doing stand up has to remain in stand up.
Check out his album "The Crow". He's been playing banjo for a long time. He's a writer. Etc.
I'd say people need to get off his case. The man was fucking hilarious for the best part of 15 years and entertained millions of people. He still does.
How many of you can say that as you sit hunchbacked at your desks?
It says "flirt" not "flint".
"...further confirmation that almost everything Steve Martin produced during that era was incredibly funny."
Indeed. I miss him and his virtually peerless humor, particularly when I see a lot of the stand-up these days. Sigh.
No, it's definitely Flint, as in the place.
I love you, Steve Martin.
What a dude!
Reminds me of old school Steve Martin. Cruel Shoes and The Jerk.
Has anyone considered that the letter itself is the joke?
Steve still have some good work to do. He wrote and starred in Shopgirl, which was pretty good.
Just to clear up a few points... it's "Flint", as in Flint, Michigan (born and raised). and the letter is legit. You'll just have to trust me on that. Or I could sell the original copy to the highest bidding "Jerry"??? Thanks for the nod Letters of Note!
Sincerely,
DaBlade (Jerry)
I know this will sound like a plug, but Martin's autobiog. "Born Standing Up" is a great read. Bittersweet, but contains some great insider info. re: his magic acts and humor. Helps to get a sense of the creative process.
Thanks for dropping by Jerry. Since featuring this letter less than 24hrs ago the response has understandably been phenomenal. Letters from Steve Martin are rarely seen, and yours is particularly fantastic.
Agree with Rfried ... "Born Standing Up" is a great read and made me a fan for life of Steve Martin, whatever he's doing: comedy, acting, music ...
The "Born Standing Up" audiobook (as read by the author) is a delight.
"Has anyone considered that the letter itself is the joke?"
Are you serious? No, that thought only occurred to you and was too esoteroic for the rest of us.
"Doonesbury" did it first, around 1973 (the reputed writer was President Nixon: "I was saddened to hear your ___father___ lost his job at the ___factory___.") Nice twist by Martin here, though.
Waiting for the call from 626-L.A. will that be okay? O.D.E.P.88 / ATX-512. See you in the Movies. aka : Pig eye Jackson
I thought the letter itself was the joke too! I love Steve Martin! He's so good!!
Only he could get away with that. Such confidence! He KNEW that Jerry would "get it".
He was truly, truly, dreadful in It's Complicated. One of the worst acting performances put to film. Henny Youngman couldn't have done it any worse.
Remarkable in it's badness, and awful.
I still have an original LP of his concert that he did from long ago. It has the King Tut song on it. The happy feet skit. Don't put your money in FRED'S BANK!
Steve Martin was one of the main writers for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Show in the 60's before he did stand-up. He actually began doing the stand-up on the Smothers Brothers Comedy show. Some of the same bits he later did on Saturday Night Live..
How lovely it must have been to open that letter.
Early Steve Martin is comedic genius
