Your pal, John K.

In 1998, aged just 14, aspiring young cartoonist Amir Avni decided to get in touch with the creator of Ren & Stimpy, John Kricfalusi. Being a hardcore fan of Kricfalusi's work, Amir sent him an introductory letter along with a few cartoons he'd drawn, some of which contained relatively unknown characters of John's. To call Kricfalusi's response 'generous' would be an understatement, and when I asked Amir about the reply he said the following:
'I think John puts a lot of faith in the younger generation of cartoonists, and wants to make sure they are well educated. He sees the younger generation as the future of cartoons, and that's why he's so approachable and good willed.'
It's an admirable stance. Below is the fantastic letter Amir received, along with this this picture and a book by Preston Blair. Fast forward 12 years and Amir is currently in his 4th year of the Animation program at Sheridan College, even having worked as part of John's Digital Inking crew on the George Liquor Show. His brilliant work can be seen at his blog, Toonamir, and John's blog is here. Many thanks to Amir.

Recommended Reading: Preston Blair's Animation 1: Learn to Animate Cartoons Step by Step (Cartooning, Book 1), as sent by Kricfalusi to Amir.

Note: Thanks to the incredible response to this post, John Kricfalusi subsequently answered questions over on Reddit, who even changed their logo for a day to honour him.

Dear Amir,

Thanks for your letter and all your cartoons to look at.

We're having trouble opening your flash files, though; when I click the player it opens a blank screen. I have somebody trying to figure it out. If it doesn't work, maybe you can post them on the web and give me the URL.

Your comics are pretty good, especially your staging and continuity. You might have the makings of a good storyboard artist. I'm sending you a very good how to draw animation book by Preston Blair. Preston was one of Tex Avery's animators. He animated 'Red Hot Riding Hood' and many other characters.

His book shows you very important fundamentals of good cartoon drawing.

Construction. Learn how to construct your drawings out of 3-dimensional objects. Learn how to draw hands so they look solid. I want you to copy the drawings in his book. Start on the first page, draw slow. Look very closely. Measure the proportions. Draw the drawings step-by-step, just the way Preston does.

After you finish each drawing check it carefully against the drawing in the book. (if you do your drawings on tracing paper, you can lay the paper on top of the book to see where you made mistakes. On your drawing write the mistakes. Then do the drawing again, this time correcting the mistakes.

Here's another important piece of information for you:

Good drawing is more important than anything else in animation. More than ideas, style, stories. Everything starts with good drawing. Learn to draw construction, perspective.

Ok, now it's up to you.

Oh, by the way - OLD cartoons (from the 1940'a especially are better than new cartoons. If you copy the drawings in new cartoons you won't learn anything - except how to get bad habits. Look at Tom and Jerry from 1947 - 1954 or Elmer Fudd + Porky Pig from the 40's + early 50's.)

I'm amazed at how much you know about us. How do you know about BIGLOAF? and MILDMAN!

You can see Jimmy + George Liquor on the internet. Oh, I guess you know that.

Allright Bastard, let's get to work. Draw! and slow now.

My email address is [redacted] if you have any questions - not too many I hope! I get a lot of email and it's hard to answer it all.

Your pal,

John K.

Wow. It's awesome when people open up like this to those who aspire to follow in their footsteps. If only more people had the attitude (and, I suppose, the time) to be this friendly and supportive.

Full marks to John Kricfalusi on all counts - Ren & Stimpy made me cry with laughter many times and it's great to see the lengths he went to support future talent.
Thank you to LofN for sharing...

Back when I was little, Ren and Stimpy was my favorite show. To think people used to call it a bad influence. This guy seems very encouraging.

John K is a genius, he's made me pee my pants laughing more times than i care to remember....and i agree, it's brilliant to see him not only taking the time to reply to this letter, but to give such support, encouragement & direction to another aspiring young talent...i've said it before & i'll say it again..the world needs more men like this!

Wow. Wish I'd written him when i was learning to draw. Would have taken three years off the process.

I get the feeling everybody here already knows about John K's fantastic animation blog, but just in case...

John K returned my fan mail as a teenager too... it meant the world to me.

I think in the future yall should do a better job of obscuring email addresses, for length and character tails, that you don't want public. I know who John's email provider is now, and since his user name is so short, I could probably figure it out if I did some research on him and his cartoons. If he had to close a long held account because he was getting inundated by fans, it would be too bad.

John did the same thing for my son years back ... sent a signed drawing. Very cool.

Incredible post! Does anyone know which Preston Blair instructional book he mentioned in the letter?

What a WONDERFUL man, a letter like this can make all the difference to a teenager trying to find themselves and develop their talents. I know, because a TV series actor I wrote to when I was in high school responded much like this with a handwritten letter full of thanks and encouragement. You can just imagine what that meant to my self-esteem and self-confidence.

Hi folks, this is John K. I just got wind of this thing by a friend of mine who said I should "do an AMA" or something. How do I do I do that?

Anonymous said...

that is just fantastic. one more reason to love MR. K. of course- he could have gone the krusty the clown route and chewed the kid out for wasting his time over the course of an eight page letter. that would have been cool too.

OriginalDavid said...

i call troll on JohnK. has to be a troll. jimmyR much?

Anonymous said...

that is pretty epic. i should try that lol.

JohnK - Regarding your question about doing an AMA I would suggest creating an account on Reddit and doing it there.

What's an AMA?

Thats an amazing letter to get back from someone you look up too. Good on Mr. Kricfalusi for looking out for the next generation of cartoonists.

If you ever get a chance, check out 'Ren and Stimpy -The Lost Episodes.' On top of being fun and dirty, there are really neat interviews with John and his animation staff. It's clear from them that he's created an atmosphere of fun with his crew, and that he's big on bringing up the next generation. -If you're reading these posts, JK, you're a class act. (Nipple drawings, notwithstanding.)

Wow, that sure beats the time I was ten years old, wrote a fan letter to REO Speedwagon (this was like 1983), included drawings of their instruments and everything, and all I got back was a fucking MERCHANDISE CATALOG full of satin baseball jackets and Zippo lighters. I was TEN! So if anyone from REO Speedwagon is reading this, thanks for shattering my illusions at an early age, guys. Sure explains why you had the staying power of Saltines.

So nice that John took the time to appreciate and encourage his fan, what a great response!

See. This is what life is all about... sharing, helping. It's so nice and refreshing to read something like this. I so wish someone would have taken that kind of time when I was young. I imaging that this letter holds a lot of meaning for the person it was written to.

Great post it's wonderful to see those with success behind them inspiring those who look up to them! So often we hear the negative that celebrities do here's some positive that can help change someone's life or if anything inspire them to greatness!

Keep up the great work John K. I for one LOVE Ren and Stimpy! Best cartoon EVAH :)

What an awesome response, and how generous to a stranger.

I'm not into cartoons. I suck at drawing. But this is beyond awesome. Great gesture of John K. If only more people were like him :)

I absolutely love it when time is taken to reply to a fan, especially in such detail and with such passion. It does the heart good to know that some folks care enough to realise it's another person at the end of that letter, and not just another anonymous note of adulation.

And as with the letter you published recently from Dr Suess it just goes to show the positive effects it can have on the lives of the child who sent it.

Bravo John K, bravo.

David Feiss from Cow and Chicken did the same for me years ago

Cartoonists are FREAKIN AWESOME!

Tom Buckner said...

Everybody's talking about the Simpsons right now, but it seems to me that Ren & Stimpy was also very influential; Ren & Stimpy had a film noir sensibility (see the wonderful "Space Madness" for example) and a willingness to embrace cringe-inducing visuals, simultaneously alarming and hilarious. These qualities gave other animators permission to do darker humor. I see John K's fingerprints all over Invader Zim, for example, The Oblongs, and nearly anything on Adult Swim.

Geez, thats powerful yet so simple. learning moment

Medisoft said...

That was an amazing reply. I'm not a cartoonist, and don't really get into Ren and Stimpy, but still, from someone of that caliber, it was an excellent reply to a young person!

You know who else is really good about returning fan mail? Angus Oblong. He sent me an autograph and drawing after I wrote to him, gushing over his talents.

Hey John, an AMA is an "ask me anything" post at Reddit. Just a Q&A forum type thing.

I am really surprised at this; I thought I had read some time ago that John K was a very picky artist (and usually very critical towards pretty much anyone who doesn't draw just like he does, though to be fair, this young man's art very strongly emulates John K's). Nevertheless, I am pleasantly surprised; I have always liked John K's stuff and am relieved he's not at all the cranky old git the last thing I read about him made him out to be.

This is the coolest most inspiring idol walking this planet! Damn, he makes me want to get that book and start drawing!

And I am a grown man, for crying out loud! (well, I won't start doing that..)

Big ups to John!!

I rarely get involved in these kinda things but this is just an amazing example of compassion. He could easily have just ignored the letter and he not only gives the guy a book but gives a detailed list of what he can do and lets him contact him. You rarely see that kind of sincerity anymore, and when it does happen it usually gets little fanfare.

Braden said...

That is not only the work of an artist, but a true craftsman. I've never really been a big Ren and Stimpy fan, but my respect for the John has grown immensely.

You know, I find it freaking AMAZING how so many super-high-value guys are such ABSOLUTE FREAKING SWEETHEARTS!!!

I cannot tell you how many big-britchesed, self-important, dismissive toolboxes are tiny and less-accomplished than these Titans who take a few minutes of their time to give out what amounts to probably thousands of dollars worth of advice, FOR FREE,
TO PEOPLE WHO COULD NEVER AFFORD TO PAY FOR IT!

If there is more high-value behavior than what John K. did, it's hard to imagine. (besides Mother Theresa-scale stuff, btw)

Guy Kawasaki and Stephen King are some other guys who are like that, too.

I just saw my life change from reading this letter. I'm actually working to get into Sheridan or Max the Mutt or Ringling. Everything he mentioned in that letter is dead on and I wish I had someone like that tell me when I started drawing at 6 years old. If you don't understand fundamentals and don't practice, chances are you'll just be an artist on the surface and that is what I will stirve not to be. Thank you to whoever put this up, and thanks to John and Amir. I loved Ren and Stimpy when I was a kid.

What a great letter! Almost as good as the one Iggy Pop wrote to me!!

What the h*ll is John K doing now???!!

Anonymous said...

I loved Ren and Stimpy from the very first frame I saw. Nobody has ever come even close to the level of genius before or since. I have watched every episode on the DVD sets and each time find some new thing to make me laugh. The level of art, satire, humour is beyond belief. Reading this letter makes me love em just a little bit more. My only sadness is there are not more. John K - you are a true genius and a solid human.
When they first aired my wife and I had a good pal who lived a block or two away and each saturday morning she would come over bearing breakfasty treats and we would all huddle under a quilt on our bed and scream with laughter as we watched. The poor girl in the apt above us was convinced that we were having a crazy 3 way orgy every Saturday morning and complained to our landlord who thankfully "got it" and also became a fan!
When can we get more of this stuff!!!

A bit zealous with the nostalgia there. I think what he means is Hanna Barbara animation stinks and a few other companies are following their lead these days
