In the summer of 1899, whilst alone in his
Colorado Springs laboratory working with his
magnifying transmitter, the inimitable
Nikola Tesla observed a series of unusual rhythmic signals which he described as 'counting codes'. Having just detected cosmic radio signals for the first time, Tesla immediately believed them to be attempted communications from an intelligent life-form on either Venus or Mars, and later said of the experience, 'The feeling is constantly growing on me that I had been the first to hear the greeting of one planet to another'.
The next year, Tesla was asked by the
Red Cross to predict man's greatest possible achievement over the next century. The letter below was his reply.

The retrospect is glorious, the prospect inspiring: Much might be said of both. But one idea dominates my mind. This - my best, my dearest - is for your noble cause.
I have observed electrical actions, which have appeared inexplicable. Faint and uncertain though they were, they have given me a deep conviction and foreknowledge that
are ere long all human beings on this globe, as one, will turn their eyes to the firmament above, with feelings of love and reverence, thrilled by the glad news: "Brethren! We have a message from another world, unknown and remote. It reads: one… two… three…"

A little context. He developed a very sensetative antanne for wireless powertransmission and happened to recorded alien signals. Alien in this context does not mean inteligent life form, but rather the interesting fact that radio waves travel through space. Also there were periodic signals comming through space indicating something that is not just static. He saw this, and responded by calling them signals. In reality he was telling the truth, and an important one, that radio waves travel far, and that there are periodic signals comming from starts and nebulae, but he did not know the source, but jounalists took this and ran calling it martian. This pulse he saw was probally a pulsar/quazar, a significant find considering he was pioneering inductior loops for wireless power transmission, back when edison was still pushing the DC powergrid.
Tesla was a force of nature. Some think he actually caused the Tunguska event.
okay - call me a nerd, but he's been my fave scientist ever since reading his biography way back when. Edison's name should not even be spoken in the same sentence!
Tesla was probably listening to cosmic Radio Waves given off by supernovas or distant stars. It would be interesting to think that he may have picked up on an alien radio broadcast, maybe someone out there is watching the 1981 World Series right now and thinks its the best thing ever. It would be amazing to think aliens out there are watching our television or listening to our radio and looking at the stars just like we are, thinking, "I wonder if those beings out there know we exist".

Pulsars don't go 1,2,3. Although I guess if he meant dot dot dot was 1,2,3. I wonder if he was picking up something from an electric motor (he invented a couple types) or an early telegraph. Wild guesses from a decided non-genius.
