Prepare For Contact

Here's a 1924 telegram from then Chief of U.S. Naval Operations, Edward W. Eberle, instructing all Naval stations to monitor the airwaves for any unusual transmissions due to anticipated contact from Martians. August 22nd of that year was witness to the closest Mars opposition since 1804 (a mere 55,777,566 km), and as such provided desirable conditions in which to receive radio signals from the Red Planet. The man tasked with clearing the airwaves - a Professor David Todd - somehow managed to persuade both the Army and Navy to report any findings for a three day period, but failed to silence the country's private radio broadcasters for even two days. Needless to say, the three day exercise produced nothing but static.

Popular Radio Magazine ran with this ad prior to the opposition. Let me know if you have one of higher quality.

Speaking as someone who despairs of textspeak, this reminds me that telegrams also forced humans to write a certain way and (whew) didn't destroy the literacy of the human race...how funny to think now that a telegram reads like Twitter. Oy, it's having a backwards effect on me now...

...though not one lol, rofl, gr8, wtf in the entire piece. And spelling seems to be on track :P

True! Although I guess there was nothing to lol about if the concern was Martian contact. Although maybe a wtf if they did get in touch.

Um, it's signed SECNAV, or Secretary of the Navy, not Chief of Naval Operations. SECNAV is a civilian post appointed by the President, CNO is a military post, the highest in the U.S. Navy.

To me it looks like this telegram was delivered after the date on which action was requested. Isn't that odd?

@Anonymous... you are completely right. SECNAV is Secretary of the Navy.. this letter was not from the CNO. Just some whacked appointed civilian.

Given that they had no strong reason to believe one way or the other in 1924, I think that assuming life/intelligence/radio emissions on Mars wasn't all that "whacked." You never know until you try to find out.
